Director Angus MacLane wears his influences on his sleeve, with nods to Star Wars, Alien, and Dune, among others. The film’s pace never lets up, plunging audiences into the frenetic mayhem of alien fights and space-ship flights. This gives the movie a lot of energy, but it might have been nice to get a breather every now and then – a deeper understanding of where Buzz and his crew came from and the world they’re trying to return to would make its emotional beats more potent.

Nevertheless, Chris Evans steps into the voice acting arena with grace; his performance is a major plus, as is the rest of the cast. The visuals are striking, too. The film’s messages, about giving up on heroic world-saving fantasies and learning to work together as a team, are uncynical and wholesome, which should appeal to families with children. But the franchise connection feels like window dressing slapped onto a sci-fi adventure without a shred of ambition. That’s a shame, because it could have been something special.
