A tradition of sports reporting attracting some of the finest writers in journalism began in Victorian England, where the most modern sports – association football, cricket and rugby – were first codified. The Boat Race, an annual rowing race between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, provided the first mass spectator event for journalistic coverage.
The 1920s saw a massive increase in the amount of space given to sports in newspapers. This was fueled by growing interest in baseball, college football and basketball and European football (now known as soccer). In the United States, professional sports leagues formed and television began to expand.
The earliest examples of fan-based sports journalism were the “fanzines” – cheaply printed magazines written by fans that bypassed official club match programs and traditional journalists. More recently, investigative journalism has uncovered many scandals, such as doping and fixed races in international athletics. Duncan Mackay of The Guardian and Steven Downes, of the Sunday Times, were among those who broke these stories.
